Windsor has recently completed the delivery and commissioning of a 3 MW electric boiler at Speight’s Brewery in Dunedin, marking a major milestone in the site’s transition to lower‑carbon emissions.

The project was officially opened last week with representatives from Lion’s management team, Dunedin Members of Parliament and members of the Green Party in attendance. The timing highlighted both the brewery’s long history and its commitment to investing in a more sustainable future.
The project involved upgrading the brewery’s primary energy source for steam production from LPG to electricity. The new boiler is expected to reduce the site’s greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 85 per cent and deliver lifetime emissions savings of around 18,500 tonnes – equivalent to 708 tonnes per year.
The system was officially commissioned by the Honourable Rachel Brooking, MP for Dunedin, recognising the significance of the project for both local industry and New Zealand’s broader energy transition.
As New Zealand’s oldest working brewery, Speight’s required a solution that could support ambitious emissions reductions without compromising the reliability and performance essential to daily operations. Windsor worked closely with Lion and site stakeholders throughout the project’s execution, from engineering and supply through to commissioning, ensuring the new system integrated seamlessly with existing infrastructure.

The installation also reflects a long‑standing partnership between Windsor and the Speight’s site. The original 4 MW LPG boiler, also supplied by Windsor and visible within the plant, has supported brewery operations for many years, underpinning the decision to continue working with Windsor as the site transitions to cleaner energy solutions.
Speaking at the opening, Lion Chief Operating Officer and New Zealand Country Director Craig Baldie acknowledged the significance of the investment, saying, “We are proud to have made a significant investment in New Zealand’s oldest working brewery.”
Windsor recognises the strong collaboration shown by the Lion and Speight’s teams throughout the project and appreciates the trust placed in Windsor’s engineering, delivery and ongoing support. The successful completion of the electric boiler installation demonstrates how established industrial sites can move toward lower‑carbon operations while continuing to rely on proven engineering performance and long‑term partnerships.
